Thorner's Court

Thorner’s Court has been located on its current city-centre site since 1866. While the buildings have evolved over time, the purpose has remained the same: to provide secure, affordable almshouse accommodation for independent living.

Today, Thorner’s Court offers self‑contained, one‑bedroom flats for single occupancy. All homes were comprehensively remodelled during 2022–2023, bringing them up to modern standards while retaining the character of the site.

The Accommodation

Each flat is self‑contained and comprises:

  • Entrance hall

  • Lounge with open‑plan kitchen

  • One bedroom

  • Shower room

Kitchens are fitted with an eye‑level electric oven and hob, and each flat benefits from a practical amount of built‑in cupboard and storage space.

Heating is provided by modern off‑peak, high heat‑retention electric storage heaters, with hot water supplied by off‑peak or on‑peak electricity.

The Building and Facilities

Thorner’s Court is a secure building with:

  • A secure door‑entry system

  • Two lifts serving all floors

  • A residents’ lounge

  • Communal laundry facilities

  • Mobility scooter and bicycle storage

The building is set within landscaped gardens, providing shared outdoor space for residents.

A limited number of parking spaces are available on site and are allocated on a first‑come, first‑served basis.

Location

Thorner’s Court is well located for city‑centre amenities. The building sits close to the Bedford Place and London Road retail areas.

Key local destinations include:

  • Southampton Central railway station – approximately 13 minutes’ walk, with services to London, Bournemouth, Brighton and Southampton Airport Parkway

  • The Mayflower Theatre – around 13 minutes’ walk

  • Central Library at the Civic Centre – approximately 10 minutes’ walk via Watts Park

  • West Quay shopping centre – around 16 minutes’ walk

This central location provides easy access to shops, public transport, cultural venues and essential services, while still benefiting from the quieter setting of the landscaped grounds.

Thorner’s Court is an almshouse scheme for independent living. Residents must be able to live independently, as the charity does not provide care or personal support.
